Joe Gosek
Joe Gosek is one of the select few drivers to have truly conquered these tracks. They are the meanest, nastiest, fastest, wildest short track race cars in America, maybe the world. I’m talking about the Oswego Speedway supermodifieds and their look-almost-alike cousin, the ISMA winged version. . “Double-O Joe,” so named for his No. 00 supers, has been behind the wheel of these nearly unmanageable beasts for some 40 years. At Oswego, Joe’s first win came on August 3, 1980. Since then he’s added another 43 victories; his 44 Oswego winner’s trophies rank fourth on the track’s all-time victories category.
Included in those wins are three International Classic victories----truly the ultimate test for man and machine---in 1991, ’92, and 2002. And twice he was the track’s top point man, winning that championship in 2003 and again in 2011.
Bolting on the unique ISMA wing, Gosek registered another 30 wins, and series point titles in 1987 and again in 2000. He’s also won the Star Speedway Classic twice, in 1995 and 2001.
But perhaps the highlight of any racer’s career is to say “I raced in the Indianapolis 500.” Joe did that in 1996, scoring a 22nd place finish.
