Brice’s NAPA EMPA Photo Contest Rules 2022-2023
Categories:
Awards will be given for 1st, 2nd and 3rd in each of the following categories unless noted differently.
ACTION: A SINGLE , Non-Crash Peak Action Photo
ACTION SEQUENCE: A series of photographs which depict racing action in good taste. At least ONE of the photos must have been published.
CRASH ACTION: A SINGLE photo depicting an accident or mishap.
FEATURE: A SINGLE photo which depicts something other than racing action
PICTURE STORY: A racing event portrayed by multiple photos. The photos should be inter-related to convey a singular story line. At least ONE photo must have been published.
PORTRAIT AND PERSONALITY: A SINGLE racing photo that reveals a subjects character.
PURE ART: A photo showing the photographer’s creative work with digital photography. This photo may be enhanced or edited to fit the title of Pure Art. This category does not need to be published. (Cannot be used in Portfolio)
UNPUBLISHED: A SINGLE unpublished photo which shows the photographer’s handiwork and creative talent.
PORTFOLIO OF THE YEAR: (One Winner) Four photos in a formal presentation as a demonstration of the photographer’s craft. Three of the photos must be published and only one is allowed to be unpublished. All four photos must have a Large letter “P” on the back of the board.
Entries must include (1) Action or Crash Action
(1) Feature
(2) of your choice (any category except Pure Art)
(1) Only ONE Unpublished photo is eligible.
Portfolio entries to be selected by the photographer from any of their entries in the 8 categories listed above.
BEST OF SHOW: (One Winner) A single image selected from the winners of the 8 categories listed above.
Honorable Mentions: Approximate 1-3 Honorable mentions will be chosen by the judges. Those Honorable Mentions will be eligible for the Janice Brice Memorial award, chosen by our sponsor Bill and Sue Brice.
Howie Hodge Award: Before the contest every contestant can enter a photo of their choice to be judged and voted on by the Photographers.
GENERAL RULES:
1.Judging will be done during the annual convention by a panel of experts approved by the photo committee, The contest director and/or photo committee Chairman will review all rules with the panel of judges prior to the start of judging.
2. An entering photographer will be limited to a total of EIGHT boards with no limit to the number of entries’ in each category. (This entry limit will be strictly enforced), Each board constitutes a single entry.
3. Each entry shall have written on the back or a label attached to the board containing the following information: Category entered, Title(Option), name of photographer, address, phone number, publication name and date. A brief description (25 words or less)(Optional) my accompany any entry.
4. A full page tear sheet verifying the photographs were published during the previous calendar year (date of publication) must accompany the boards and be shown to the contest director when the boards are submitted, No tear sheet will be attached to the board. No tear sheet is required in unpublished categories. ABSOLUTELY NO PHOTOGRPAHS WILL BE ACCEPTED WITHOUT THE FULL PAGE TEAR SHEET VERIFICATION. NO PHOTOCOPIES WILL BE ACCEPTED.
5. All pictures will be submitted to the director mounted on a BLACK 16” x 20” mount board only, (No cut-outs of mount boards) Mount boards may not have matte overlays. No picture may be entered in more than one category. Previous winning photos may not be entered again, No printing or lettering shall be placed on the display side of the entry.
6. Printing will be restricted to a 11”x14” (or no more than a total of 154 square inches on a altered print size) on single entries and may be completed with any technique as long as it meets the mounting criteria listed above. All entries should reflect the photographer’s highest self standard and be suitable for exhibition. See rule 7A.
7. Judging will be conducted under the following rules:
a. Judging of pictures will be done on the following criteria: Picture content and impact only.
b. no one but the contest director and/or photo committee chairman may speak to any of the judges
until the judging is complete. Any offense of this ruling will lead to dismissal from the judging.
c. Judges will offer constructive criticism of the winning entries after the judging is completed. There
will be no response from the entrants.
8. Please Note. Entries in this contest are to be photographs, not taken from videotaping procedures or by digital and computer enhancements. There is no longer any entry fee, but you must have a current membership.
Prizes as follows: First Place: $125, Second Place: $100, 3rd Place: $75, Portfolio: $125, Best of Show: $125
